Aida Smith is a self-taught oil painter living in a rural area near Wellington, New Zealand.
Using figurative language, she explores subjects close to her, primarily still life and landscapes. These are intimate views, unified by soft forms and rich palettes.
“I’d call what I paint imperfect realism. There’s a gravitational pull towards what I am observing, but I fight to keep from being too closely tied to that image.”
Originally from Maine (USA), Aida attended some art classes in high school and at university, but taught herself oil painting later in life.
The selection of materials that have minimal impact on the environment is an essential aspect of Aida’s practice. She uses professional oil paints without solvents or mediums. She chooses not to varnish her paintings, preferring the soft and natural finish of oil paint.
